GO GET THAT JOB!

By Abraham Yakobi

SUCCESSEFUL JOB SEARCHING!

All of us search for a job at one time or the other! It may be our first job or just searching to change employers. Job searching is comparable to selling! Where the product you are selling is you! Selling skills come in handy to your successful job searching. The aim of this article is to equip you with those skills.

Get the job!

Yuck! I do not want to be a salesman. Nevertheless, successful sales people are go-getters. I believe you want to be a go-getter, -don’t you? Here is how.

Getting that job requires you to develop in addition to writing an excellent résumé’;

-          the right attitude,

-          be self motivated

-          set goals

-          know how to prospect for the Job

-          know how to write a powerful sales letter(application letter)

-          Polish your negotiation skills.

Before launching into the do’s and don’ts let me clarify here that, I am not a career expert, for great career advice, please visit relevant websites. What I am is a successful sales person who has used selling skills to change employers when the time for changing jobs came.

Attitude

It is amazing how many of us in spite of having heard this word hundreds of times, completely ignore the magic power it holds. Attitude is everything. Do you believe you can or you can’t? In both cases, you are right! The right ATTITUDE is to tell yourself you can. When in doubt just remember Henry Fords’ words “Whether you think you can or think you cannot – you are right”

Be Motivated

Motivation is the fuel to getting. Are you pumped up, energized and are raring to go get that job? Make getting the Job your greatest desire and you will get it!

Set Goals

Goals will bring you safely to the harbour. They are the beacons to your getting that job. Look at potential employers. List them down. Decide how you are going to tackle newspaper advertisements, which career experts you will post your résumé with, who you will cold call, how many letters you will send out.

Your goals must compliment your desires, values, and principles. One successful individual sent out three hundred résumés in one week. He got two hundred and eighty regrets. He was however invited for twenty interviews. What are your goals?

Having set your goals, stay observant. Are you moving towards your goals? Be flexible. In life, certain things occur unexpectedly. Flexibility ensures that you adapt your approach to the new situation.

How to prospect for the job

‘Know thyself.’ What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? What advantages do you have over others? What are the greatest obstacles you must surmount? What conversation are you having with yourself? Talk positively.

Go where the action is. Sniff out opportunities. Grab them.

“A job seeker got a call through to the CEO of a large firm. She said; “You were at a party last Saturday night, and you met a young woman in a navy blue dress. You talked to here for a half hour.”

“Yes. That’s true,” said the CEO.

“And,” the job seeker continued, “You told her that you were impressed with her knowledge and insight, thought there might be a place for her on your staff, and said to call you first thing this week.”

“Indeed I did,” Said the CEO.

“Well, I was listening to you both, and if she hasn’t called, I’d like the job,” (Leadership –October 20 1998)

Network everywhere keep your ears open!

Write a powerful sales letter

Again, I must reiterate that I am not a career expert. To learn how to write an application letter, please consult a career expert. However, here are a few tips on a powerful sales letter.

- Spell out the benefits that you will bring to the employer early in the letter.

- Write easily; avoid high blown jargon and phrases.

- Let the letter flow and lead the reader on, keep one theme per paragraph.

- Be factual and sincere.

- Arouse interest in the reader; make the reader curious to meet you.

Polish your negotiation skills

Negotiation is an art. Know what you are aiming for. What are you willing to take? What will you give in return for what you want?

Carry out a research on your prospective employer; Get facts. Be prepared. Seek mutual benefit between you and the employer. Listen more to what the interviewers are saying. Stay in communication longer. Communicate with courage. Strive for a win – win situation.

In life, you do not get what you deserve but what you negotiate. Be resilient. Don’t give up. The job will be yours.
